This refreshing winter mocktail is boldly colored, effervescent, and just the right mix of citrus and spice. Take advantage of blood orange season this year and shake up this unusual bubbly drink in just a few minutes!

A quick and easy turmeric ginger syrup adds a deep, earthy flavor with a burst of zesty ginger spice. This syrup takes just minutes to make and adds a ton of flavor. Get the Turmeric Ginger Syrup recipe and learn how you can add even more spiced flavor!
The real star of this drink is freshly squeezed, bright red, blood orange juice. Look for fruits with visible red patches – those will often have the most red color inside. Some blood oranges are more red than others. The redder the fruit, the sweeter and more berry-like their juice will taste.

When are blood oranges in season?
Blood oranges can be found in most grocery stores in the US from December to April. This year, I started seeing them at Whole Foods in October, which made for some great Halloween drinks.
To pick the best blood oranges, look for skin with fairly smooth skin that’s red, burgundy or deep orange in color. Pale skinned fruits tend to be less red on the inside, in my experience.
They’ll still taste good, but you won’t get as much of that intensely red color. Avoid fruits that have overly soft skin. These are past their prime and will have mushy flesh that’s less flavorful.
How to juice blood oranges
Because blood oranges are quite small, I like to juice with with an elbow-style citrus squeezer. This is the same tool I use for juicing lemons and limes. You can find these tools in a variety of sizes, including one specifically designed for oranges that’s a bit bigger.
You can also use: a citrus reamer, an electric juicer, or a pair of metal tongs! Yes, tongs.
Cut an orange or other citrus fruit in half and place it between the two arms of the tongs, flesh side facing out. Place it in the middle of the two sides of the tongs, rather than at either end.
Using both hands, squeeze together the tong’s arms, extracting the juice from the fruit with much less effort than if you squeezed it by hand!

Blood Orange Turmeric Mocktail ingredients:
- 1 oz blood orange juice
- 1 oz turmeric ginger syrup
- ½ oz lime juice
- Club soda
- Fresh mint, optional, for garnish
Measure your ingredients using a jigger or tablespoons. One ounce is the same as two tablespoons. A half ounce is one tablespoon.

Fill a glass with ice and pour the freshly squeezed citrus juices and the syrup over the ice. Stir to chill, then top with a few ounces of chilled club soda. You can use seltzer water or sparkling mineral water, whatever you have on hand.

Gently stir the drink, then garnish with a slice of blood orange and a sprig of mint. The mint garnish adds a fresh, cool aroma that makes the drink even more refreshing. Another great wintertime garnish for this drink is a sprig of fresh rosemary.
